Rajmudi Desi Rice
🌾 Rajmudi Desi Rice
A Royal Heritage Rice from Karnataka
Rajmudi Desi Rice is a rare heritage red rice traditionally associated with the royal kitchens of the Mysore Kingdom. Carefully grown by farmers of Sahaja Samrudda Organic Producer Company (FPO) in Karnataka, this indigenous variety is cultivated using natural and organic farming practices while preserving traditional seed diversity. Sahaja Samrudda is a farmer-led organization dedicated to conserving India's indigenous crop varieties and promoting sustainable agriculture.
Naturally cultivated and single (semi) polished, Rajmudi retains much of its natural bran layer, giving it a rich earthy flavour, pleasant chewy texture, and wholesome nutrition. Compared with highly polished white rice, semi-polished Rajmudi naturally retains more dietary fibre and other naturally occurring nutrients present in the bran layer.

🌾 What Makes This Rice Special?
Rajmudi is one of Karnataka's most celebrated traditional rice varieties and has been preserved through generations by farming communities committed to conserving indigenous seeds.
Unlike highly polished commercial rice, this Rajmudi is single (semi) polished, allowing much of the natural bran layer to remain. The bran contributes to the rice's characteristic red colour, wholesome flavour, and naturally occurring dietary fibre.
At Tazawan, we source this rice from Sahaja Samrudda FPO, an organization that works closely with thousands of farmers to conserve traditional rice varieties and strengthen biodiversity through sustainable farming practices.

Rajmudi is a traditional red rice, and its natural red bran contains dietary fibre together with antioxidant compounds such as phenolics and anthocyanin-related pigments that are commonly found in pigmented rice varieties. Research indicates that semi-polished red rice generally retains more fibre and antioxidant compounds than highly polished white rice.
Because of its wholesome nature, Rajmudi is often preferred by families looking for minimally processed traditional grains.
🌱 Traditional Belief
According to traditional knowledge from Karnataka, Rajmudi was once reserved for the Mysore Royal Family because of its wholesome nutrition and distinctive quality.
Traditional farming communities believe Rajmudi:
- Helps provide sustained energy throughout the day.
- Traditionally supports strength and stamina.
- Is a nourishing rice for everyday family meals.
- Contributes to an active lifestyle when consumed as part of a balanced diet.
Note: These are traditional beliefs and are not established medical or scientific claims.
🍚 How to Cook
For the best taste and texture, soak Rajmudi Desi Rice for 45 minutes to 1 hour before cooking. As this rice is single (semi) polished and naturally retains more of the grain's bran and dietary fibre, soaking helps the grains absorb water evenly and cook consistently.
Water Ratio
- Stovetop: 1 cup rice : 2.5 cups water
- Rice Cooker: Start with 1 cup rice : 2 cups water and adjust slightly if needed.
Every kitchen is different. We recommend cooking a small quantity during the first two or three attempts and adjusting the water according to your preferred texture.
👩🍳 Tazawan Cooking Tips
1️⃣ Soak Before Cooking
Soak Rajmudi Desi Rice for 45 minutes to 1 hour before cooking.
2️⃣ Cook on a Low Flame
For stovetop cooking, simmer the rice on a low flame after it reaches a boil. Gentle cooking helps preserve the grain's natural texture and flavour.
3️⃣ Retain the Soaking Water
Whenever possible, cook the rice using the same water in which it was soaked. This traditional practice may help retain naturally occurring water-soluble nutrients.
4️⃣ Wash Gently
Avoid washing the rice vigorously or repeatedly. A single gentle rinse is usually sufficient to help preserve the fibre-rich bran layer.
5️⃣ Adjust to Your Preference
Traditional desi rice varieties cook differently from modern polished rice. After two or three cooking attempts, you'll easily identify the ideal water quantity for your preferred texture.
